Reading will consist of Reader’s Workshop, Guided Reading, and Independent Reading. Students will choose books at their ability/interest level and apply comprehension skills taught in class.
MATH WORKSHOP
The math curriculum is built around the Common Core State Standards for fifth grade. We will learn about geometric figures; measuring volume; solving equations with variables; algebraic patterns; solving multi-digit multiplication and division equations; equivalency, comparing and ordering, and multi-digit operations of fractions and decimals.
WRITING WORKSHOP
Writing will focus on genre writing incorporating the six traits and Lucy Calkins. Writing units will include: personal narratives, informational reports, opinion/persuasive essays, literary essays, and poetry.
WORD STUDY
The spelling program used is Journeys which consists of 20 weekly spelling words that follow a particular word pattern. Additionally, students will learn about grammar, figurative language, word choice and origins, and cursive handwriting.
